Looking up inside Nevidio canyon: sheer limestone walls on both sides almost meeting overhead, leaving a narrow strip of white sky. Three canyoners in helmets wade the pale green river far below.

The canyon they couldn’t see.

The day

You walk in, and the canyon closes over you.

Wetsuit, harness, helmet. Then a full day downstream — wading, swimming the pools, sliding polished rock, abseiling the drops. A guide rigs every rope and goes first.

I had never been canyoning and I was quietly terrified in the car up from Šavnik. Stefan explained every abseil before we did it, went first every single time, and never once made anyone feel slow. By the third pool I was jumping in on purpose. The canyon itself is unbelievable — you spend four hours somewhere that looks like it has no business being reachable on foot.

Best thing we did in Montenegro, and we did a lot. The water is genuinely cold — they tell you that honestly beforehand, which I appreciated — but the wetsuit does its job and you stop noticing after the first swim. Small group, no queuing, no rushing. Highly recommend.

What sold me was how unglamorous the safety was. Ropes checked out loud, one person moving at a time, a clear signal for everything. Nothing improvised. I have done canyons in Austria and Slovenia with bigger operators and this was run better than most of them. Gear was in good condition too, which is not always the case.

Went with my 14-year-old and it was the highlight of the whole trip for both of us. He is still telling people about the slide. Stefan gave him the option to walk around the bigger jump with no fuss at all, which mattered more than I expected. Bring warm clothes for afterwards and eat properly before you go.

Živim u Podgorici i Nevidio sam odlagao godinama. Trebalo je da idem ranije. Odličan vodič, sve objašnjeno na vrijeme, bez žurbe i bez gluposti u kanjonu. Vrijedi svakog eura.

Is this trip for you?

Once the descent starts there is no path out at the side. Better to decide against it here than in the canyon.

Yes, if…

  • you can swim a short distance in your kit
  • you can keep moving all day on wet, uneven ground
  • you don’t mind being cold and wet for hours
  • you’ll do what a guide says, immediately
  • you have never been canyoning — that is normal

Not this trip, if…

  • you are a weak swimmer, or panic in moving water
  • you have a recent injury, or a back, knee, shoulder or heart problem
  • you are pregnant
  • you are under 10
  • cold water genuinely frightens you

Gear provided

Wetsuit, helmet, harness, ropes. You bring footwear that laces on — what to bring.

Guided throughout

The guide rigs every drop, goes first, and is the last one down.

Water levels

Too high and the trip does not run. The guide decides, and it is not negotiable.
